How to Get Your Business Found on Google Locally (2026 Checklist)

Almost every week an owner tells us the same thing: "I searched my own business and I'm not there." Local search isn't magic and it isn't pay-to-play. It's mostly a handful of unglamorous details that most small businesses never get around to fixing.

Here's the checklist, in the order that actually moves the needle.

1. Make your name, address, and phone number identical everywhere

Search engines match your business across the web by comparing your NAP — name, address, phone. If your website says "Ste 4", your Facebook page says "Suite #4", and an old directory still has your 2019 phone number, Google can't tell whether those are one business or three. That uncertainty costs you rankings.

Pick one exact format. Write it down. Use that same string on your site footer, your social profiles, and every directory you appear in — including your EZZlisting listing.

2. Claim the listings you already have

You almost certainly exist on sites you never signed up for. Search your business name in quotes and see what comes back. Claim what you can, correct what's wrong, and delete duplicates. A wrong phone number on page two of Google is a customer who called someone else.

3. Pick your categories carefully

A category is how a directory decides which searches you belong in. "Contractor" is a worse choice than "Roofing Contractor" if roofs are what you do. Choose the most specific category that's still accurate, then add the rest as services. Browse our categories to see how customers actually search for what you sell.

4. Write a description a human would read

Most business descriptions are three sentences of nothing: "We are committed to excellence and customer satisfaction." That helps no one and ranks for nothing.

Write what you'd say to a customer standing in front of you:

  • What you do, in the words customers use — not industry jargon.
  • The neighborhoods, towns, or ZIP codes you serve.
  • What makes you the obvious choice: years in business, licensing, same-day service,

weekend hours, a specialty nobody else nearby offers.

If writing isn't your thing, the EZZ AI Assistant drafts it from a few questions and you edit from there.

5. Get real photos up

Listings with photos get clicked. Not stock photos — your storefront, your team, your actual work. Three good pictures beat twelve blurry ones. Shoot them on a phone in daylight.

6. Build a few honest links back to your site

Every quality directory listing that links to your website is a signal that you're a real business. You don't need hundreds. You need a handful from places that matter: your chamber of commerce, your trade association, your suppliers' dealer pages, and local directories like EZZlisting. We wrote more about why that matters in Get a free backlink to grow your website traffic.

7. Ask for reviews — and answer them

Ask every happy customer, every time, while they're still standing there. Then reply to what comes in, especially the bad ones. A calm, specific reply to a one-star review does more for a stranger's trust than ten five-star reviews with no response.

8. Check back once a quarter

Hours change. Phone numbers change. You add a service. Put a recurring 20-minute reminder on your calendar to re-search your business name and fix whatever drifted.

Start with the free stuff

None of the above requires an ad budget. If you only do one thing this week, claim a free listing with your correct NAP, a real description, and a link to your site.
