We crossed a line this week that is worth stopping on.

EZZlisting.com now has 52,664 live business listings, spread across 309 cities and 28 categories. A few months ago this directory covered one metro. Today you can search a ZIP code in most of California and get a real answer, and we are working outward from there, state by state.

What actually changed

The honest version: a directory with one city in it is not a directory. It is a demo. You cannot tell a plumber in Fresno that customers will find them here if nobody in Fresno has a reason to visit.

So we went and built the coverage first. Every major city in California is now in, from San Diego and San Jose down to the places that never make a "best of" list but absolutely have a locksmith you need at eleven at night. Along the way, the listings that belong to neighbouring towns landed on their own pages too, because we file every business under the city its ZIP code actually belongs to rather than whatever somebody typed in a form. That is why the city count is higher than the number of places we set out to import.

Where the listings come from

We think you should know this, so here it is plainly.

Most of these listings are built from OpenStreetMap, the open map of the world maintained by hundreds of thousands of contributors, and used under the Open Database License. Every imported listing credits it and links back to the original record.

That gives us real names, real addresses, real phone numbers and real opening hours — not invented filler. It also means the data is imperfect in the specific way open data is imperfect: some records are years out of date, some are missing a phone number, and some businesses have moved or closed since a mapper last walked past.

Which brings us to the part that matters to you.

Your business may already be listed

If you run a business in a city we have reached, there is a good chance it is already here, sitting there unclaimed with whatever OpenStreetMap knew about it.

Claiming it is free, and it is the single highest-value thing you can do in the next ten minutes. When you claim a listing you can:

  • Fix the hours, phone number and address so customers reach you instead of a dead line
  • Add photos, a real description, and the services you actually offer
  • List the ZIP codes you serve, so you appear in searches from the areas you cover
  • Post jobs when you are hiring
  • Build an EZZ Coupon that customers can save to their phone

An unclaimed listing still shows up in search results. A claimed one converts, because it answers the questions a customer has before they call.

What is next

More states. We are working through the country by metro, largest first, and the same treatment each one gets: real boundaries, real addresses, listings filed under the city they actually sit in, and a landing page for each city and category combination that has enough businesses to be worth visiting.

If your city is not covered yet, add your business anyway. The page for your city and your trade comes into existence the moment a business backs it — you do not have to wait for us to get there.

Thanks for being here early.
